Through the rapids

After a nice cappuccino and a fresh blueberry scone we headed out from Lund in the rain. The trip through Desolation Sound was uneventful and the weather got better as we moved along.. There is a series of narrow passes with strong currents called rapids starting with Yuculta, Gillard and Dent. The current was running around 6 knots when we got there, but one of the advantages of a powerful boat is you can muscle through. At one point the boat was moving through the water at 11 knots but we were only going 2 knots over the ground. There were some strong eddy lines too. At times you use the skills learned kayaking.

After the rapids we had the current going our direction so we kept on keeping on and finally settled on an old Government Dock at Port Nevis for our stop for the night. Port Nevis used to have a store but it close in the 60's. Today there are a couple of homes and a lawn that seems well maintained and the dock was a welcome refuge from Johnstone Straight.

Tonight we are having fresh salmon and getting ready for a long way tomorrow if we are going to get around Cape Caution.
